The 70900A Local Oscillator Module provides a swept LO signal of 3.0 to 6.6 GHz, processes video signals, and acts as master controller for the spectrum analyzer. It contains the system firmware to control and coordinate measurements and to output data. The 70900A has a minimum 32K bytes of memory for DLPs. For use with the 70000 series modular spectrum analyzer mainframes (not included).

  • The HP 70000A modular spectrum analyzer systems series consists of a mainframe (70001A), a graphics display (70205A/6A), plug-in instrument modules, cooling, power, and two digital communications bus interfaces. It is compatible with 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 width modules and has a maximum capacity of eight one-section (1/8 width) modules.

The 70900A local oscillator is a 1/4 width module that consists of three eleiments: a local oscillator, a controller, and a video processor.

The local oscillator supplies a swept signal with a frequency range of 3.0 to 6.6 GHz for use by the front end modules, tracking generator, external mixer interface module, or any other module or device requiring the signal. For spans ≤10 MHz, the sweep is fully synthesized using fractional-N techniques while for spans >10 MHz, lock-and-roll tuning is used.

The video processor digitizes the video signal received from the IF module and processes this signal using normal (Rosenfell), positive peak, negative peak, or sample detection.

The controller contains the system firmware, which controls and coordinates measurements. Other system modules (such as, front ends, IF, tracking generator) are slave modules that are controlled by the local oscillator module.

The following switches ares used for HP-IB control:

  • SWI/MEM (switch/memory): Specifies how the HP-IB address is set. When set to SWI, the address can be changed with the address switch only. When set to MEM, the address can be selected with either the switch or the front panel softkeys
  • MAS/SLA (master/slave): Set to MAS during normal spectrum analyzer operation. The switch is set to SLA for some special applications that require system configuration
  • NRML/TEST (normal/test): Set to NRML. The TEST setting is for diagnostic purposes
