PS3 Series Polarization Dependent Loss Multimeter The JDS Uniphase Polarization Dependent Loss Multimeters arethe fastest and most accurate multimeters available. Theymeasure polarization dependent loss (PDL) of single-modefiberoptic components using either an internal laser or anexternal source. The multimeters measure the loss of a deviceunder test for four independent input polarization states. ThePDL and the average loss over all polarization states arecalculated using the Mueller matrix, internationallystandardized under IEC (613)00-3-12. The multimeters easily and rapidly change from measuring PDLand insertion loss (IL) to measuring return loss (RL) or power.The PDL and IL are measured and displayed simultaneously inless than two seconds. The multimeters have a sophisticated optical design thatcompensates for changes in optical power at the internalreference detector. The design ensures accurate lossmeasurements regardless of drift in the source power or thecoupling efficiency of the input light through the polarizationstate controller. The integrated PDL standard source isparticularly convenient for verifying the meter's calibration.
