The HP 8620C sweep oscillator mainframe, together with either an RF Section, and oscillator modules, or an RF plug-in, forms a completely solid-state self-contained multiband swept signal source. The 8620C is designed for use with network analyzer systems such as the 8410B/8411A to provide a complete microwave measurement system. Other systems can also be built, using the 8620C as a swept signal source.

The front panel is designed for simplicity and ease of operation. It is hinged to the mainframe to faciliate changing of the frequency dial. Pressing a mode control selects the mode and causes the lamp in the control to light -  providing a positive identication of the mode selected.

Up to four separate bands and respective frequency scales can be selected with a band-select lever to the left of the dial scale. Pushbuttons, concentrically located in the frequency control knobs, light when actuated to indicate the sweep function in use.

The 8620C provides strong programming capabilities. The standard model includes inputs for band selection, sweep function selection, and analog frequency control. Optionally, more flexible digital frequency programming is available.

• Sweep modes - auto, manual, and external:
  • Full sweep mode: Sweeps the full band that is determined by the plug-in and select lever. Selected automatically on power up. Three markers available for frequency identication, selected by the CW MARKER, the START  MARKER, and the STOP MARKER controls
  • Marker sweep mode: Sweeps from START MARKER to STOP MARKER frequency settings: up to the full range of the plug-in can be set to sweep either up or down in frequency 
  • ΔF sweep mode: The CW mode lamp is also lit and the center frequency is adjusted by the CW MARKER control. The ΔF control selects the full-width about the CW frequency
  • CW mode: A single-frequency RF output is selected in CW operation. The frequency is selected by adjusting the CW MARKER control. Pressing the CW VERNIER control provides a vernier function for precise frequency adjustment around the CW setting
• Sweep time: Continuously adjustable from 0.01 to 100 seconds
• Sweep triggers: Line, internal, external, and single
• Sweep output: Direct-coupled sawtooth, zero to ~+10 volts, at front panel BNC connector, concurrent with swept RF output
• Modulation: Internal AM, external AM, external FM, phase-lock
• RF blanking: When enabled, RF is automatically turned off during retrace, and remains off until the start of the next sweep
• Display (Z-axis, MKR, Pen Lift output): Direct-coupled rectangular pulse ~-5.0 volts coincident in time with RF blanking
• Pen lift: For use with x-y recorders with positive power supplies
